Blog 6 – Real Time Video Tours
Once again we have more technology in museums that are being implemented through the use of your phone. Galleries of art and museums are starting to provide virtual video experiences for those who are unwilling or unable to travel to those locations. For art and gallery lovers, it is the easiest but interactive way to view objects and exhibits. Virtual visitors may interact with curators, and even artists. This gives them an additional platform to display their art work and have their viewers interested in their exhibits. Facetime’s usage has been a resource for small-time artists to show their work without occupying costly rooms as well.
An art space for example in Queens, New York called Kimberly-Klark curated an exhibit with some collaborations from local artists through Skype and Facetime. They invited several artists, borrowed their art pieces and displayed it in a small space. Guests were able to experience art pieces through a video call, a staff walks them through the mini-gallery discussing the art pieces according to the artist’s description of the pieces.
Virtual excursions were also a major success for schools who would like to see their students explore art online. They use sites for video calling to show creativity to the pupils. For starters, the Australian Museum of Contemporary Art provides this kind of service. Everyone who wants to view MCA pieces of art will communicate with the artists and curators for immersive workshops conducted by video conferencing almost wherever they are.
